How to Recondition Dead Battery (Ultimate Guide)

They can cost anywhere between USD 100 to USD 300 new without counting rebates or trade in discounts. Needless to say, buying a new battery every 3 or 4 years is not a feasible option for many peoples. However, there are a couple of ways around this dilemma. Instead of buying a new battery, reconditioning your existing battery can give it a fresh lease on life, saving you money in the process. Even a decade old battery can be brought back to life with very little effort; you can easily eke out an additional five years or so out of a battery by reconditioning it. Let’s get started!
Get the necessary equipment ready
Before I get started on the actual reconditioning process, you should arrange everything you need for the job beforehand. Additionally, battery acid is extremely corrosive and hazardous, so take the appropriate safety precautions before opening up your battery.
You will need the following:
- battery charger designed to charge 12 volt batteries
- distilled water
- epsom salt or magnesium sulphate
- wide brush with synthetic bristles.
Also use safety gear like neoprene gloves to protect your skin from contact with acid, a heavy shop apron, and safety goggles. Ensure that there are no naked flames or sparks in the vicinity and also take care not to use any metal implements near the acid as it may react violently. Use high density plastics only when working with acids.
Prepare fresh acid
Dissolve about half a pound of Epsom salt in half a gallon of distilled water by bringing it to a near boil. Stir the mixture until the salt is completely dissolved. If you do not want to do this yourself, you can also directly purchase battery acid from your local hardware store. Before you open up the battery, thoroughly clean the battery casing with water and baking soda and scrub all corrosion from the terminals using a scrub pad and steel wool. This prevents any contaminants from compromising the integrity of your prepared acid.
Adding the acid to the battery
Pry off the battery caps using a screwdriver or pry tool, ensuring nothing falls into the battery cells through the open holes. If you have cleaned the battery casing before opening the caps, this should not be a problem. Use a dampened paper towel to clear the area surrounding the caps. Place a funnel inside the cavity and pour your acid in each cell. Visually confirm that the lead plates inside are completely covered by the acid solution. Firmly fix the caps in place and gently rock the battery from side to side so that the acid can slosh inside the battery. This ensures that the acid fully covers all the electrode surfaces and knocks off any residue that might have accumulated.
Charge your battery for about 24 hours before testing it on an electrical load. Depending on the age and condition of the battery, repeating this process a few more times will substantially enhance the performance of the battery.
